Malawi will be aiming to secure top spot in Group C at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) when they face Zambia in their final group match on Wednesday.
The Scorchers sit at the top of the standings with six points after recording back-to-back victories over Nigeria (3-2) and Egypt (3-1). A draw against Zambia would be enough to see them finish first in the group.
Head coach Lovemore Fazili, however, says his side will be targeting all three points.
“No matter what, we need to win this match, if all fails then we better draw against [Zambia], otherwise what we have told players is that we need to win the match,” Fazili said ahead of the decisive Group C encounter.
Malawi lead Group C with six points, while Zambia and Nigeria are tied on three points each. Egypt are bottom of the table without a point.
Although Malawi need only a draw to finish top of the group, a defeat by at least a two-goal margin could complicate their qualification hopes if Nigeria defeat Egypt in the other Group C fixture.
Despite the permutations, Fazili insists his team is focused solely on winning.
“We are confident with our combinations, a thing that we are focusing on, you can see that in all departments we are doing good,” he said.
Fazili also welcomed the return of attacker Asimenye Simwaka, who recently rejoined the squad after featuring at the Commonwealth Games.
“The coming in of Asimenye has boosted our squad, will see her fitness before giving her some minutes to play,” he said.
