Malawi Women’s Football Team coach Lovemore Fazili says his charges are not done yet, insisting the team will keep breaking records at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Fazili was speaking after the Scorchers of Malawi reached the semifinals and booked their place at the 2027 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Brazil following a 2-1 victory over Ghana last night.
Fazili said he cannot believe what his charges have achieved so far.
“It is something I cannot understand. Look, we are debutants in this year’s tournament. We thought it was enough to reach the quarterfinals, but we have now reached the semifinals. I cannot believe it. See now, we have qualified for the World Cup, for the first time in the history of Malawi. I thank the girls,” he said.
Asked if he is satisfied with what the Scorchers have achieved so far, Fazili said he is not and will keep breaking records.
“I cannot say we are done yet; we will keep fighting. We need to progress to the next stage. Yes, we have qualified for the World Cup, but we need to do well in our upcoming games,” said Fazili.
Captain Tabitha Chawinga said Malawians deserve this moment as they have been waiting for so long.
“This is a moment we need to celebrate. This victory belongs to Malawians. They need to celebrate. I am happy; I thank the players and God for this victory. We will keep fighting,” she said.
Malawi will face Algeria on Wednesday, with a win taking them to the final, where they will play the winner between hosts Morocco and Cameroon.
The Scorchers scored through Temwa Chawinga and Rose Kadzere. Temwa was voted Player of the Match for her goal and assist.
