African football icon Augustine Okocha, popularly known as Jay Jay Okocha, believes Africa is not producing top-quality players because players have now prioritized money over on-field performance.

The Nigerian star, who spent most of his football career in Europe, playing in the Bundesliga and the English Premier League, told SABC Sport “I believe we’re witnessing a decline in the distinctive African flair in football. Present-day players seem to be prioritizing financial gains over on-field performances.”

Okocha is one of Africa’s most successful players; he made 73 appearances for the Super Eagles and scored 14 goals.

The 50-year-old was named the best player of the tournament during the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON). He also emerged as Nigeria’s top scorer with four goals, helping them finish third.

“The current trend places money at the forefront, with passion taking a back seat in today’s football landscape. We lack that essential element as a continent,” he added.

Okocha, who retired in 2008, is, however, optimistic that Africa can conquer the world.

“By igniting our passion, there is a possibility of excelling in the World Cup and even securing the prestigious Best Player in the World Cup award in the future.

“I have yet to witness a contemporary player who rivals those from the bygone era. This is why I emphasise the need for improvement, starting with today’s local footballers.”
