Senegal to Challenge AfCON Final Verdict at CAS After Title Stripped

FSF labels CAF’s decision “unfair and unprecedented” as they move to sport’s highest court following Morocco’s successful appeal over the controversial 2025 final.

Hours after being stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) title, Senegal have confirmed they will appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The move follows a dramatic ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday, which overturned Senegal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco in the AfCON final after a successful protest by the hosts.

The final itself was marred by controversy after Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco. Following a period of deliberation, the match eventually resumed, with Senegal going on to secure a 1-0 win in extra time.

In January, CAF’s Disciplinary Board had dismissed a protest filed by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), which alleged regulatory breaches by the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF).

The protest centred on alleged violations of Articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations regulations during the final.

However, Morocco later pursued the matter further, with a subsequent appeal now upheld in their favour, prompting CAF to reverse the result.

What has Senegal said?

CAF’s decision has been met with sharp criticism by football stakeholders.

Senegal are now seeking to challenge the outcome at the CAS, sport’s highest arbitration body.

“The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has today taken note of the notification of the decision rendered on March 17, 2026, by the Appeals Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in case DC23316,” a statement from the Senegalese FA read in part.

The FA described the ruling as unfair.

“The Senegalese Football Federation denounces this unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable decision, which discredits African football.

“To defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the Federation will initiate an appeal as soon as possible before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne,” it stated.
