Eastern Province FAZ Division One side Mika Football Club head coach Kelvin Nyendwa has set his sights on progressing beyond the preliminary rounds of the 2026 ABSA Cup.
The club is among the ten teams that have secured qualification for the prestigious tournament and will begin their campaign in the preliminary stage of the country’s only cup competition.
In an interview, Nyendwa said he was delighted to guide the team to qualification, adding that “it would be my second attempt because my first attempt was with Katete Rangers. By then, I was an assistant coach. So I feel great to have my team qualify for ABSA.”
With the CAF Confederation Cup qualification on the line, Nyendwa said he is targeting at least two victories in the competition, including wins in the preliminary and quarter-final stages.
“The players are ready for the encounters. In this tournament, we want to work extra hard to at least cross over the bridge because, mostly for the Division One and provincial teams, they just end up just playing one game, that’s all. So, we want to win at least about two to three games so that we can reach the finals,” he stated.
Nyendwa also expressed confidence that provincial clubs can win the Absa Cup in the near future.
“I saw that memo [about Absa Cup winners playing the CAF Confederation]. We’ll also try to work extra hard so that at least we see our team moving forward. We know it’s a bigger tournament. Otherwise, it will be a very big achievement for my team.”
“We came all the way from the academies, and now we are facing bigger and bigger teams, which we also appreciate,” he concluded.
