Zesco United and Red Arrows, the Zambian representatives in the CAF Confederations Cup and Champions League, will receive a whooping $50,000 (about ZMK 1,311,650) each for taking part in the interclub tournaments’ preliminary phase.
This follows CAF’s statement on Friday that all of the clubs taking part in the two competitions’ preliminary rounds will now get financial support.
CAF said that the money is aimed at providing more financial assistance to Clubs, “in line with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s promise to improve club Competitions and the Clubs.”
For the first time, CAF is providing clubs participating in the preliminary rounds of the two competitions with financial assistance. In the past, clubs had to advance through the group stages in order to get a portion of the total prize money.
Meanwhile, the CAF Confederation Cup winners will receive USD 2 000 000, while the winners of the CAF Champions League take home USD 4 000 000, up from USD 2,5 000 000 in 2022.
Zesco will take on Dynamos FC of Zimbabwe on Sunday in the Confederations Cup, while Red Arrows will clash with Malawi’s Nyanja Big Bullets on the same day in the Champions League.
