The MTN Super League entered week five last weekend, with Zanaco FC moving to the top of the table after beating Nkana FC 1-0 in Kitwe on Sunday. The victory means the Bankers are now unbeaten in their first five matches of the season — a better start compared to last season.

It was also their first victory at Nkana Stadium since 2022, when they defeated Aba Red 3-2 in front of their home fans.

“It was a great game, it was a tough game. Playing against Nkana away from home is not easy, but credit has to go to the players; they did well from the first whistle up to the last whistle. We fought as a team, today it was not easy as we were one man down,” Zanaco assistant coach Henry Banda told journalists after the match on Sunday.

He added: “We just have to remain calm and continue working hard because the league is a marathon, we have got alot of games ahead of us, we just have to take each game as it comes.”

Zanaco have now won three matches and drawn two, topping the table with 11 points.

For Nkana, the defeat leaves them winless this season after their only victory over Green Buffaloes was nullified for fielding an ineligible defender, Nduna Zulu, in breach of player registration rules. Nkana have drawn two games and lost two, leaving them deep in the relegation zone in 17th place.

Nkana coach Mwenya Chipepo called for patience after the defeat: “We just have to be patient. We have seen where we are wrong as coaches, and we are going to work on the mistakes we are making,” he said.

Elsewhere in the league, Napsa Stars moved out of the relegation zone after recording their first win of the season — a 1-0 victory over Mines United — to climb to 12th on the table. Mines United dropped to the bottom as they remain winless this season.
