Zanaco FC head coach, Numba Mumamba, remains optimistic about his team’s chances of avoiding relegation, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Napsa Stars in their Week 28 fixture on Thursday.
The loss dealt a blow to the Bankers’ survival hopes, dropping them to 14th place in the league standings with 32 points from 28 matches.
Since Mumamba’s appointment in January from Kabwe Warriors, Zanaco has shown gradual improvement. They were on a three-match winning streak before Thursday’s defeat. The coach is hopeful that his team will continue to find their rhythm and secure their spot in the Super League.
Speaking to the club’s media, a visibly disappointed Mumamba reflected on the loss: “Of Course a very disappointing result that we got. This is a game that we expected a worst result would have been a draw looking at the proceedings of the game. We just gave away that silly goal due to poor communication between the goalkeeper and our defenders,” he said.
Despite the setback, Mumamba highlighted the positives in the team’s recent performances, noting a steady improvement.
“I think we have shown a bit of consistency if you look at the team; Zanaco never used to win three games in a row,” stated Numba. “I think this is a positive that we have to pick and encourage the team they have picked up in terms of performance. All we need is just to encourage them so that we do better and remain in the Super League.”
With only six games remaining in the season, Zanaco must earn at least nine points from their final fixtures to ensure their survival in the Super League.
