Mufulira Wanderers have suffered their third consecutive defeat under new head coach Tenant Chilumba, following a 1-0 loss to Green Eagles in a Week 10 fixture of the Zambian Premier League on Saturday.

The result keeps the legendary club rooted in the relegation zone as Chilumba and his technical bench continue to turn the tables.

Chilumba, who was appointed late last month on a two-year, eight-month contract, stepped in after Charles Kafula was dismissed following a poor start to the season.

Despite hopes for a turnaround, Chilumba’s tenure began with a 2-1 defeat to Nkwazi, followed by a 3-1 loss to Nkana last weekend.

Saturday’s loss in Choma marked another setback for both the coach and his team. However, Chilumba, the former Kabwe Warriors, coach expressed measured optimism.

“I think, overview, both halves we played well despite conceding the goal. I think we have to go to the drawing board; we won’t complain much, we just have to continue fighting, we have to up the game.”

Wanderers have managed only two wins this season, along with two draws and six losses in their ten matches to date.

“We continue to fight”- Chilumba.

Asked where the team fell short against the Green Eagles, Chilumba emphasized his players’ efforts despite their inability to find the net. The decisive moment came in the 19th minute with a strike from Amity Shamende.

“I think we played well both halves, just the goal we conceded. The boys continued fighting,“ Chilumba reiterated.

Acknowledging the ongoing challenges in building team cohesion, Chilumba noted, “Looking at the team, we are still looking at the coordination of the team. We are still new with the team, but overall, today we played well. We still have to continue fighting.”

Wanderers’ latest defeat leaves them third from bottom, with just eight points out of a possible 30 this season.
