Mutapa Eyes First Kitwe Derby Win as Dynamos Face Nkana

Unbeaten Dynamos look to maintain momentum in a high-stakes derby.

Power Dynamos and Nkana clash again today in the highly anticipated Kitwe derby at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Dynamos head into the fixture on an 11-match unbeaten run dating back to December 2025, while Nkana are winless in their last four games, with their last victory coming in March—a 2-0 win over Konkola Blades.

In their last six meetings, both teams have recorded two wins each, with the other two matches ending in draws, including the most recent encounter, which finished 1-1.

Speaking ahead of the derby, Nkana assistant coach Josephat Nkhoma described today’s encounter as special.

“Today’s game is a different game; it’s a different feeling in the sense that it’s a game that all the people in Kitwe, Lusaka, and even across the nation are waiting to see who is going to carry the day. That’s the only difference with the other league [games] we have been playing, so we are ready.”

For Oswald Mutapa, who has yet to beat Nkana since his appointment as Power Dynamos head coach, the match is not about him but the team.

“For me it’s not a personal thing; what is important is the team,” Mutapa said. “And I think we are ready in terms of the way we have been performing lately; we haven’t lost a game this year, so we are actually in good shape, and the players are looking towards the game. It’s an important game for us with intent and intensity because this is something that we really need to get.”

Asked how dangerous a struggling Nkana side can be in today’s derby, Mutapa responded:

“They might be dangerous, but it all comes down to us and the way we respond. For me, the response has to be with cool heads but played with the highest intensity. We are the team to beat this season, so we just have to apply ourselves better in tomorrow’s game.”
