Zambian Super League side Mufulira Wanderers Football Club has confirmed that an armed robbery occurred on Sunday evening following their 1-0 defeat to Nchanga Rangers in Week 20 fixture at Shinde Stadium, which was sold out.
According to the club, the incident happened around 18:00 hours at the club secretariat, where armed robbers held staff at gunpoint and stole K181,000 in gate takings.
The suspects also hijacked a Toyota Harrier, belonging to Logistics Manager Patrick Mwanza, which was meant to transport the cash to Mopani Security for safekeeping. Gunshots were reportedly fired to disperse bystanders before the attackers fled.
Police were alerted immediately and launched a manhunt. The stolen vehicle was later recovered after being abandoned, but the suspects escaped with the cash.
The club has expressed regret over the incident and says it is fully cooperating with authorities while working to strengthen its security measures.
“Armed robbers held members of staff at gunpoint and made away with cash amounting to K181,000, which had been realised from gate takings.
