Power Dynamos’ chief executive officer, Gibson Chaloba, says the club’s ambition is to conquer Africa following their qualification for the CAF Champions League.
After their domestic success, Power have returned to the Champions League and will be Zambia’s flag bearers in next season’s biggest club competition on the continent.
One of the biggest criticisms of Zambian clubs in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions has been that they fail to go beyond the preliminary rounds.
The last time a Zambian club went as far as the semi–finals of the Champions League was in 2016, when Zesco United were eliminated by eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
On their last attempt, Power were eliminated at the pre–group stage after recording a 3-all aggregate draw that saw them knocked out on the away goal rule.
We can do it again- Chaloba
Drawing inspiration from the Power Dynamos of the 90s, which won the Mandela Cup, now called the Confederation Cup, Chaloba said the club can conquer Africa.
“Most people are telling me, that CEO you are being too ambitious, but I am not. I can tell we have been champions before. We were champions of the Mandela Cup, now the Mandela Cup is being called the CAF Confederation Cup.
“So now, Power Dynamos being the best performing team, these are the guys that are going to actualize the task that we have is to make Power Dynamos the best team and that is achievable. We need to make sure that that team that was actualized some 20 [35] years ago we do it again,” Chaloba said.
Nkana is the only Zambian club that has come close to lifting the Champions League, having played in the 1990 final against Algerian side JS Kabylie.
However, the Kitwe giants lost 5–3 on post-match penalties at Independence Stadium in Lusaka having been tied 1 – all over two legs.
