Kabwe Warriors Chief Executive Officer Chilombo Chabwe has joined Power Dynamos, Mufulira Wanderers, and Zesco United in expressing their opinions over the Zambian Premier League’s (ZPL) decision to change the qualification criteria for the CAF Confederations Cup.

The ZPL announced that the winner of this year’s ABSA Cup will automatically qualify for the 2026/27 CAF Confederations Cup.

According to ZPL, the Champions of the 2025-26 MTN Super League will represent Zambia in the CAF Champions League, while the winners of the ABSA will qualify for the Confederations Cup.

However, in the case that the same team wins both the league and the ABSA Cup, the runners-up will take up the Confederation Cup place.

Previously, the Super League champions would represent the country in the CAF Champions League, while the runners-up would participate in the Confederations Cup.

Speaking to Bolanews exclusively, Kabwe Warriors’ Chabwe emphasised that the league needs to be competitive and teams need to work hard to earn qualification.

“The fact is the league needs to be very competitive, so for one to participate in CAF inter-club competition, they must beat the rest. It is just unfortunate that we are informed late, and we wish this information would have reached us before the start of the season. Nevertheless, we need to adjust our objectives so that we can align ourselves with CAF requirements,” he said.
