Ex-Nkana defender Alick Sichinga has advised his former club to offer head coach Mwenya Chipepo a long-term contract, following the impressive results recorded this season.
Chipepo was appointed to replace Ian Bakala earlier in the season, at a time when Nkana were battling relegation. Since then, he has orchestrated one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent Zambian football history.
Nkana now sits third on the log with 55 points, nine behind league leaders Power Dynamos.
Sichinga told BolaNews that Chipepo has proven his value and deserves the club’s full backing.
“We need stability… Looking at the work that Chipepo has done, I think he needs a longer term. This is where we miss it in Zambia; coaches don’t last for more than five years.
“But if you want progress, you need to give a coach time and from what Chipepo has done so far, it has shown that he can improve the team when given more time,” Sichinga said.
Chipepo’s current contract is set to expire in October next year, having initially signed a two-year deal when he succeeded Bakala.
“They need to move in quickly and tie him down, maybe to a three-year additional contract. Because we can say he is now remaining with one year to his contract. I hope that is what they are thinking at the club.
“We have chopped and changed coaches for a while at the club; now that we have a coach who is bringing results, we need to be a bit more stable in that department,” he said.
