Newly promoted Super League side Mines United has received a major boost, with Club Chairman Matthew Mohan announcing plans to construct a 15,000-capacity stadium as a reward for the team’s historic promotion to Zambia’s top-flight league.

Mines United secured their place in the Zambia Super League after finishing third in the National Division One with 62 points, following a season tally of 18 wins, 8 draws, and 8 losses.

Based in Kabwe, the team made a remarkable debut in the National Division One and will now feature in the Super League for the first time in the club’s history.

Their journey to promotion has been nothing short of impressive. Once positioned at the bottom of the league table, Mines United turned their fortunes around to finish in the top four—securing a spot among Zambia’s elite clubs.

Club Chairman Mohan, who took over the club last year, has played a pivotal role in its transformation and is now focused on building a team capable of making a strong impact in the Super League.

Speaking in a telephone interview on ZNBC Radio 4’s Sports Day show, Mohan praised the team’s remarkable turnaround and commitment to excellence.

“We took over this team last year it was in Division One, qualified them to National league and within nine months they have secured promotion to the Super League,” said Mohan.

He continued, “But when this team was put together we told them look we have an agenda and our agenda is to win nothing else. We are proud to tell you as of yesterday we are at 62 points, number three in position and qualified to the Super League.”

Mines United Super League target

Mohan, who also chairs Farmers Nest, emphasized that the team’s ambition is not merely to compete but to win the league.

“So our target as Mines United is to actually win the Premier league for the 2025/26 Season. As a team we have made it clear that we will be winning the Super league and let everyone be aware we are not coming in for jokes or to play, we are coming in to create value for our community,” Mohan confidently said.

He added, “We shall unveil our team very soon and all I can say is that all eyes will be in Makululu very soon. We need to create value in football.”

As part of this vision, Mohan revealed a partnership with the Zambian Army, through which Mines United has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to take over the President Stadium in Kabwe.

“We have the president stadium we signed an MOU with the Army as Farmers Nest that we are taking over that stadium. We will be demolishing it and we are planning to put up a 15,000 Capacity stadium with a shopping mall,” promised Mohan.

In a historic milestone for Kabwe town, the 2025/26 season will feature three teams from the town in the Super League: Kabwe Warriors, Prison Leopards, and now, Mines United.
