After defeating Napsa Stars 1-0 on Saturday, Red Arrows, together with Zesco United, and Mutondo Stars are all tied for first place in the Zambian super league with 11 points.
And Arrows tactician Chisi Mbewe believes his squad can fight for the crown this year if they improve their goal scoring rates.
“In all the games we have played this season, we have created numerous challenges except we have not been utilizing the opportunities to score,” he said.
“I think we are good in defense and midfield …we just need to improve upfront where we need to be scoring goals,” he added.
The Airmen defeated the Pensioners for the first time since May 2021 thanks to an own goal in the 66th minute from Napsa Stars defender Fredrick Mwimwanzi.
“We knew it was not going to be an easy game playing Napsa [Stars]. “They had numerous chances in the first half but could not convert. But we told the players to be focused and keep possession.”
Arrows aiming for back-to-back victories.
Perry Mutapa, his opponent, expressed sadness after losing the match despite controlling the majority of the game.
“This is the game we should have won had we used utilized our chances,” he said. “If anything, we have buried that game in the first half with ease. But in football, if you don’t take use of your opportunities, you’ll pay,”
Red Arrows will now hope for back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they travel to Kabwe to face Prison Leopards, the following week after earning their third victory of the 2023/2024 campaign.
