FC Muza striker Andrew Phiri believes he can still overtake Freddy Michael Kouablan as the Zambian Super League’s top scorer and win the Golden Boot at the end of the season.

Andrew is the second-highest goal scorer in the league, with eight goals from 14 matches played so far.

The striker has maintained his excellent form after scoring 14 goals last season to help the team qualify for their first CAF Confederation Cup, which they exited in the group stage.

Speaking to Bolanews in an exclusive interview, Phiri said that he is not under pressure after losing the Golden Boot last season to Power Dynamos’ Andy Boyeli, who netted 18 goals.

“Not really pressured; football is a collective game and what’s important is the team winning. I get goals to help the team win and individual goals come second,” he said.

Phiri’s goal this season is to win the Golden Boot, but he faces stiff competition from in-form Ivorian and Green Eagles striker Freddy Michael, who leads the chart with nine goals in eight games as of week 14.

“Fred is a very good striker and has shown it with his goals; the league is still young and goals are still coming,” Phiri said.

“I will score as many goals as possible to help the team and hope I become top scorer by the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, Andrew’s performance has not gone unnoticed, as it has earned him a national team call-up by Avram Grant, and he will be hoping he makes the squad for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
