Carlo Ancelotti has been officially announced as the first foreign manager of Brazil’s men’s national team, marking a historic appointment as he prepares to leave Real Madrid at the end of the 2024/25 season.

The Italian coach’s future had been uncertain following Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal, compounded by defeats in El Clásico and the Copa del Rey final. Despite speculation of an early dismissal, Ancelotti was allowed to see out the season.

On Monday, Brazil’s football federation (CBF) confirmed his appointment: “The CBF is proud to confirm that Carlo Ancelotti will become the next head coach of the Brazilian national football team.”

Ancelotti will officially take charge on May 26, 2025, ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifying campaign in June.

“This landmark moment sees the coming together of two icons – the only five-time FIFA World Cup champions, and a coach with an unmatched record across Europe’s elite competitions,” the CBF added.

Acknowledging his current contract, the CBF expressed gratitude to Real Madrid and president Florentino Perez: “We extend our sincere gratitude to Real Madrid and Mr Perez for the cordiality and sportsmanship shown in facilitating the coach’s release during his contract term.”

Ancelotti’s likely successor at Real Madrid is former midfielder Xabi Alonso, who recently announced his departure from Bayer Leverkusen, paving the way for a return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports suggest Alonso could assume the role in time for this summer’s Club World Cup.
