Fazili targets Cameroon and Senegal friendlies to prepare Scorchers for historic WAFCON debut

The Malawi Women’s National Football Team head coach, Lovemore Fazili, has revealed that he will submit a proposal to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to arrange international friendly matches against Cameroon and Senegal.

Fazili believes that facing West African opposition will better prepare the Scorchers for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals, which will be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3 this year.

The Scorchers will be making their first-ever appearance at the WAFCON finals since the team’s formation, with Fazili also set to make history after guiding the side to qualification.

According to the coach, intensive preparation is key to competing at the continental showpiece, hence the need to test his team against strong West African sides.

Cameroon are currently ranked 70th on the FIFA rankings, while Senegal sit at 81st, compared to Malawi’s 153rd position — a challenge Fazili believes will be beneficial.

Malawi have already faced higher-ranked teams such as Zambia, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco and Zimbabwe during their preparations for the WAFCON qualifiers. They recently secured a 2–0 victory over Angola at Bingu National Stadium in the qualification campaign.

“Mind you Cameroon and Senegal also qualified for the Wafcon and I realised that they can give us good preparations,” said Fazili.

However, the proposed friendly matches will depend on approval from FAM, particularly regarding the availability of funds and the willingness of Cameroon and Senegal to participate.
