The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has strengthened the Malawi National Women’s Football Team technical bench ahead of their maiden appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) next month.

The association has brought in South Africans Sudesh Singh as technical advisor and Tyrese Steyn as performance analyst.

FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said they had responded to the proposal from the executive committee to strengthen the technical panel ahead of the WAFCON.

With that, Haiya said he believes the Scorchers will deliver and that their target is to reach the semi-finals and qualify for the World Cup.

“We have fulfilled that plan given by the executive. We have brought in someone who has connections to Malawi. As we go to WAFCON, it is our hope that we reach the semi-finals so that we can qualify for the World Cup,” said Haiya.

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili believes the arrival of the two officials will help the team perform well at WAFCON.

“This is a good development. I thank the president. We will work together. It is an opportunity to have them. The journey has been long, but it’s good that we will be working with them. We are doing well in preparation for WAFCON,” he said.

Singh, a popular TV pundit on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa show, said it is a privilege to be part of the technical bench. He said he has been following the Scorchers.

“Malawi has very talented players. I have seen the talent in attack. I had meetings with the head coach. It was a warm welcome. People are open-minded to new ideas. Offensively, we have exceptional talent. We know the opposition we are facing in Morocco,” he said.

Singh has previously served in technical and advisory roles for over 30 years. He has served as Sports Director of the South African Football Coaches Association, Technical Consultant at Botswana side Masitaoka FC, and Football Strategist for SuperSport’s Soccer Africa show.

Malawi in the Group of Death

Malawi will open their WAFCON campaign against defending champions Nigeria on 28 July 2026 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off at 21:00.

The Scorchers will then face Egypt on 1 August 2026 at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat before wrapping up the group stage against regional rivals Zambia on 5 August 2026 at Al Madina Stadium, with both matches scheduled to kick off at 21:00.
