Numbers for Malawi players playing in South Africa have now dropped to one after a Nigeria-born Malawian striker, Babatunde Adepoju, has joined a Mozambique top club, Costa do Sol. Only Gabadinho Mhango is the only Malawi player playing in South Africa.
Adepoju has been under Venda Football Academy (VFA), a South African second-tier side, for the past three years, but his long contract came to an end on June 30, 2026.
A source confirmed to BolaNews that the striker has signed a 6-month contract which will keep him at the club till the end of the season.
The source said the player had three offers from foreign clubs plus two local offers, but he settled for Mozambique.
“Costa offered him good money; the total value of the deal, including salaries, is around 40 million Malawi kwacha, more than what other clubs offered him,” he said.
Rumours in Malawi say the player will be returning to his former club, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, following a recommendation from their new coach, Wedson Nyirenda.
The player has been in Malawi for a month on holiday and is also waiting for his contract to come to an end.
Babatunde was approached by the Bullets, but he had already settled for Costa do Sol of Mozambique.
“The player is now in Costa camp and he will be signing his contract today. He will not return to Malawi as he is expected to start training tomorrow,” he said.
