Football coach and technical expert Franklyn Malambo has strongly defended Copper Queens goalkeeper Ngambo Musole following widespread criticism of her performance during Zambia’s 3-2 victory over Senegal at the ongoing TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Musole, who plays for Green Buffaloes, conceded a penalty in the second half after stepping off her line — a decision that sparked mixed reactions from fans and pundits.
In a detailed analysis, Malambo stated that Musole did what was required of her in that situation.
“So there’s been criticism of the Zambian goalkeeper at WAFCON — the second goal she conceded against Morocco, and more recently, the first goal against Senegal,” Malambo said. “Now, when you look at the goal Senegal scored against DR Congo in the first match, you’d realize that three of those goals had a similar theme — a ball over the top, behind the defense, aiming for a 1v1 with the goalkeeper.”
He continued: “Zambia needed what you call a sweeper keeper — someone quick off her line to narrow the angle and clear the danger. And in that regard, Musole did well. She started quickly off her line and tried to block the angle. Yes, it didn’t work out perfectly, but she applied the basics correctly.”

Malambo acknowledged that while Musole may not be the most agile of goalkeepers, her overall shot-stopping and ability to organize the defense have been commendable.
“It’s not always that when you do the basics right, things will work out. But she did what was expected — and that’s what matters. When you look at her save percentage and the number of shots she’s faced, she’s done well. She deserves credit,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chipolopolo goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga also shared words of encouragement for Musole via social media. He posted on his official Facebook page:
“Enjoy every bit of criticism; it’s part of the game. Unto the next one.”
Zambia currently sit second in Group A with four points from two matches, level with Morocco, who hold a superior goal difference.
The Copper Queens now turn their focus to Saturday’s decisive clash against DR Congo as they aim to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
