The Malawi National Women’s Football team should work hard on their defence and midfield ahead of the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals in South Africa, says former Scorchers midfielder Chisomo Kazisonga.

She told BolaNews that for Malawi to do well at WAFCON, they need to consider many factors, especially as they will be playing against organised teams.

Speaking from her base in Austria, Kazisonga said coach Lovemore Fazili should focus more on the defence and midfield for Malawi to record positive results.

“Truth be told, Malawi has players who can deliver from every department. What we need now is to reinforce the defence and midfield. Otherwise striking force with the likes of Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga we are good to go,” she said.

Kazisonga also said the team should avoid playing long balls to the strikers, saying this creates tough work for them.

“At times I have noted that we do hit it from the back to the strikers without utilizing the midfield, this creates pressure on the strikers,” she said.

She further advised that Malawi should avoid favouring star players, something she said could create problems.

“They are our stars of course but we need to appreciate every individual if it is for us to do well. I know coach Fazili has done good work already in that area,” she added.

Another former Scorchers player, Lina Chipili, who is in South Africa, agreed with Kazisonga, saying Fazili has a proper team to compete but should still focus on the midfield.

“I have noted some problems there, defensively we are good, but attacking has some weaknesses,” said the former Scorchers midfielder.

The Scorchers will face defending champions Nigeria, Egypt, and Zambia in the continental showpiece scheduled for March 18 to April 3 this year in Morocco.

This will be the first time Malawi will compete at this tournament, having qualified after beating Angola 2–0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe after the away match ended goalless.
