On the final day of the season, Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club was declared the 2022–23 FAZ Women’s Super League champions.

Red Arrows just needed a victory to win the league for the first time but were denied the opportunity by BUSA, when they played out to a goalless draw.

However, in Kabwe, Green Buffaloes upset Queens Sports Academy 0-1 to clinch the title. Maylan Malanga was the day’s hero when she scored the lone goal for the reigning champions.

Red Arrows are in second position with 80 points, while the champions finished the season with 81 points.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Bolanews, GBWFC head coach, Charles Haalubono described the 2022/23 season as the toughest ever in the history of women’s football in Zambia.

“This season has been the toughest because almost all the teams played very well and they have become more organized, and there was no easy game in this league,” he said.

What is Green Buffaloes’ secret to dominance?

There is no secret to our success; all you need to do is maintain working hard, never let your guard down, and motivate your players by making them aware of the stakes. He clarified.

Haalubono added that the team will soon start preparations for the upcoming COSAFA Women’s tournament, this coming August.

The army-sponsored side are the COSAFA defending champions, which they won after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa last year.

“We just have to start preparation as soon as possible, so that we can reorganize our team and try to improve in certain positions and also work on the coordination and will have to reinforce the team in all the departments,” he said.

Striker, Maylan Mulenga, ended the season with 23 goals, and she is the third top scorer behind Elite ladies’ captain, Xiomara Mapepa (28) goals while Ochumba Oseke Lubanji has (26) goals.
