The FIFA Council today announced the creation of a 16-team Women’s Club World Cup, which will begin in 2026 and be held every four years.
The Fifa Council, which met in Bangkok on Wednesday, also approved a new international match calendar for 2026-29, with the goal of giving players more time to rest and recover.
“The women’s international match calendar and the subsequent amendments to our regulations represent an important milestone in our pledge to take the women’s game to the next level by enhancing competitiveness across the world,” said Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
The FIFA Congress will also vote on the host of the 2027 Women’s World Cup, with Brazil up against a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.
The number of international windows in the new women’s calendar has been reduced from six to five, reducing player travel and causing fewer disruptions to domestic leagues and clubs.
FIFA says that windows will be consistently scheduled in February-March, April, May-June, October, and November-December each year, with a minimum of four weeks between international opportunities resulting in fewer disruptions.
