Malawian striker Temwa Chawinga has attributed her success to her sister Tabitha, who has been encouraging her to work hard.

Temwa was reacting to her recognition as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) regular season, where she emerged as topscorer with 21 goals in 27 games, ahead of in-form Zambian captain and Orlando Pride’s Barbara Banda (13).

Temwa told BolaNews on Tuesday that winning the MVP gave her confidence that she could achieve more with time.

“I am happy for this; I should thank everyone who has given me support and these are my fellow players, technical panel, and supporters in Malawi and across,” she said.

Temwa said most importantly she should thank her sister Tabitha, who has helped her since the day she started playing professional football.

“She could call me and tell me what to do; when I am down, she always calls me and encourages, plus she gives me some tactics,” she said.

Speaking on Temwa’s achievement, her manager Theana Msolomba said people underrated her capabilities when she was playing in China.

“But people saw her efforts during the Cosafa Cup in 2023 when she gave her soul and heart to the game. She won player of the tournament plus won the Golden Boot.

“From there, we have seen what Temwa can do, to this point now when she has won the MVP. I am happy for her,” Msolomba said.

Temwa’s incredible season has broken records, making her the first player to score 20 goals in a single season. She also became the first to score against all 13 active teams in one season hitting 26 goal contributions.
