Green Buffaloes Football Club head coach Masautso Tembo has revealed that the team’s goal is to end the 43-year MTN Super League drought, which would be a historic achievement for the Zambia Army side.

His side last won the league in 1981 but they are currently second in the standings with 22 points, three behind league leaders ZESCO United.

Buffaloes have six wins, four draws, and two losses, and they are confident of challenging for the league title.

Why Nkana Football Club is called LIKULU 🤐

Mufulira Wanderers and Zesco United are the closest, with the most titles in the MTN/FAZ Super League.

Do you think Nkana might lose their spot at the top in the next five seasons?

In an interview with BolaNews, Tembo said the team is aiming to overcome the challenge of not winning the league, which has eluded the club for years.

“We have our targets; the motto we have given ourselves is it’s ‘coming home’. Meaning, we can win even the Absa Cup, and if we go with the same momentum, we end up winning even the league,” Tembo said.

“We are concentrating on maintaining our top three positions in the first round; if we finish on a good note, we will qualify to play in the Absa Cup. In the first round, we are remaining with five games; we need to collect maximum points so that we stand a better chance of playing Absa and contending for the league.”

Tembo eyes back-to-back wins

Following an impressive 1-2 comeback victory over Napsa Stars on Saturday, the Green Buffaloes have turned their attention to Nkwazi for Wednesday’s clash at Edwin Imboela Stadium, hoping to carry the momentum forward.

Tembo claims that his team is aware of Nkwazi’s capabilities, as they have conceded the fewest goals in the league this season, demonstrating their strong defensive record.

“We are just taking this game seriously as every previous game we have played before. Bearing in mind that Nkwazi is playing good football; they have been beaten big clubs, and they drew with ZESCO,” Tembo notes.

“We’re aware of how they will come. So, we need to be focused and mindful that lately we have been conceding goals as early as in 6 minutes. We just want to maintain our defense so that they don’t score us; we have been scoring every game.”
