The Footballers & Allied Workers Union of Zambia (FAWUZ) has expressed dismay over Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba’s warning to Copper Queens players concerning their unpaid allowances.

On Saturday, most Copper Queens players allegedly boycotted training. This was ahead of Sunday’s match against Malawi, insisting on receiving their outstanding payments.

FAZ president Keith Mweemba responded by cautioning the players against boycotting training. He warned that those boycotting risk being sidelined from the team.

However, FAWUZ expressed disappointment in a media statement.

“FAWUZ is also concerned over the threats by the FAZ president, Mr. Keith Mweemba, against the girls alleged to have boycotted training to demand their dues,” read part of the statement.

“As FAWUZ, we will ensure that the girls are protected. You cannot punish or threaten the girls for genuinely demanding what they have professionally labored for.”

The Copper Queens were crowned champions of the three-nation tournament in Lilongwe after beating Zimbabwe 3-1.

The union further emphasized its commitment to safeguarding players.

“FAWUZ will not relent in our core duty of representing players and protecting them from unwarranted attacks. We remain committed to ensuring that every player, male or female, is treated with fairness, dignity, and professionalism,” the statement read.

FAWUZ has also disclosed that it has engaged the government regarding the Copper Queens’ unpaid allowances.

“We are pleased to report that the government has given a firm undertaking to ensure this issue is addressed. This commitment has been extended to the Men’s National Team (Chipolopolo), who are currently preparing for the upcoming AFCON tournament,” the statement added.
