Former Zambia national team captain and coach Fredrick Mwila, popularly known as Friedie, who was among the first African players to feature for English club Aston Villa, has died aged 80 after suffering a stroke.
Family spokesperson Lillian Kalikeka confirmed Mwila’s death to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Media, saying he died at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka around 01:00 hours on Monday.
Mwila was one of Zambia’s notable football figures, having represented the national team as a player between 1965 and 1974 before serving as head coach in 1993 and again from 1996 to 1997.

He was among the first two African players signed by Aston Villa, where he made just one appearance for the club — a goalless home draw against Blackpool on 15 November 1969, aged 23.
Born in Kasama, Zambia, on 6 July 1946, Mwila earned his move to Aston Villa through Rhokana United and the Atlanta Chiefs, where he spent two seasons in the North American Soccer League (NASL), making 72 appearances and scoring 17 goals.

According to AVDB (Aston Villa Database), his performances attracted the attention of then Aston Villa manager Tommy Docherty, who signed him in September 1969 in the same deal that brought his compatriot Emment Kapengwe to Villa Park.
The duo made history as the first African players to represent Aston Villa.
However, three days after Kapengwe’s celebrated debut, Mwila made his only appearance for the club. While Mwila impressed with his intelligent and composed play, Kapengwe struggled to reproduce the form he had displayed when he announced himself at Carlisle.
Neither player could inspire Villa to victory as the team settled for a goalless draw in a match that offered little attacking threat. Despite being signed and introduced together, Mwila and Kapengwe managed just four appearances between them.

Neither received further opportunities under Docherty or his successor, Vic Crowe.
Docherty reportedly told the two Zambians, “Look, I am going away elsewhere, but if you want to stay, you are at liberty to do so.”
Both players subsequently left Aston Villa midway through their two-year contracts and returned to Zambian football.
Mwila later returned briefly to the NASL with Atlanta Apollos before continuing his club career in Zambia.
