The Black Queens are determined to beat the Copper Queens in this Friday’s Paris Olympic first-leg qualifier despite being owed US$7,500 per player in bonuses by their FA.
Ghana and Zambia will lock horns at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg this Friday before the second leg at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola five days later.
However, the build-up to the game has been laced with stories of Ghanaian players who are being owed US$7,500 each in bonuses for the previous matches played.
Sources in the Ghana camp have told Bolanews that the bonuses pertain to four matches of the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAfCON) and Olympic Games qualifiers.
The source said initially, the bonus was set at US$4,000 per win, taking the total bonus to US$ 10,000 per player but the amount was reduced to US$7,500 after the FA played US$ 2,500.
“It will be a mistake for Zambia to think this bonus issue will destruct the team [Ghana] because the girls don’t really pay attention to that,” the source said, “their motivation is qualifying to the Olympics.”
The source said the bonus campaign is being amplified by the media because members of the press feel it is unfair to let players play for free.
“The feeling among members of the media and the general public is that the players need to be respected and paid what is due to them,” the source said.
