Midfielder Amy Sayer’s promising 2024 season has hit a snag causing Australia to suffer yet another injury setback.
Australia’s opponents at the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are Germany, Zambia, and the United States in Group B.
Sayer’s season came to an end following confirmation that the Kristianstads DFF midfielder suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The 22-year-old was helped off the pitch in the Swedish side’s Round 3 fixture against Hammarby over the weekend.
Subsequent scans indicate Sayer will face a lengthy stay on the sidelines, ruling her out of the Olympic Games.
The Matildas have a long list of players on the treatment table, including West Ham midfielder Katrina Gorry (ankle injury) and Chelsea striker Sam Kerr (ACL).
The team will open its campaign with a clash against Germany before taking on Zambia’s Copper Queens and the USA. Australia Head Coach, Tony Gustavsson, expressed his disappointment for Sayer.
“Since returning to the national team setup in late 2022, Amy has been a positive addition to our team with her attitude and work ethic on and off the pitch,” Gustavsson told Football Australia. “To have suffered this setback is an upsetting blow for Amy and for our Matildas family.”
With the recovery timeline not disclosed, Gustavsson says the team will rally behind the player as she continues to recuperate.
“As always for us, our priority will be on supporting Amy and ensuring she is provided with care and assistance as she needs to navigate this challenging time.”

Sayer, who debuted in 2018, will have more medical evaluations in Sweden prior to having an ACL surgery and starting her recovery.
