UEFA Champions League

Europa League is calling Barcelona and they are answering the call

Barcelona's chances of reaching the last 16 are currently hanging on a thread after their 3-3 draw against Inter at Camp Nou last night.

Barcelona may have gone on a shopping spree in the summer but the Catalans seem like perfect candidates to drop into the Europa League after failing to beat Inter at home and away.

After last Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at San Siro, Xavi’s men were under pressure to maximize home advantage but perhaps the pressure got to them, they were close to scoring the opener instead Pedri and the in-form Lewandowski made a mess of their opportunities on goal.

Before the half-time whistle was blown Ousmane Dembele got his name on the scoresheet as Barca went ahead after meeting an inch-perfect delivery from Sergi Roberto.

But the visitors came into the second half guns blazing and even before the home fans knew it Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez scored to make it 2-1 after an hour with a strike that hit both posts before beating Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

With time running out and home fans in silence, Xavi’s men needed to respond and they did so brilliantly when Lewandowski made it 2-2 but Inter restored parity through substitute Robin Gosens.

When it looked like Inter was destined for an away victory, Lewandowski ensured that the spoils could be shared once more in injury time, he did so with a coolly dispatched header to give Barca a chance of advancing from the group.

Inter only needs three points at home when they host Viktoria Plzen to ensure they make it out of the group stages ahead of Barcelona who will face a Bayern Munich side that has already beaten them 2-0.

Bayern are topping group C with 12 points and have sealed their place in the last 16 while Inter rank second with 7 points and Barcelona third with onl;y 4 points after recording one win and draw from their last four group stage matches.

Czech Republic’s Vitoria Plzen are at rock bottom of the group with no point having lost all their matches so far.
