Leicester City manager Gary Rowett has come to the defence of his players following the club’s relegation, insisting the squad gave everything in their fight for survival but ultimately fell short.
The Foxes were consigned to the third tier after a 2-2 draw against Hull City on Tuesday night, a result that confirmed their drop despite needing a victory to stay up. It marks only the second time in the history of Leicester City that the club has fallen to that level.
Rowett, who took charge on a short-term deal for the final 14 matches of the season, admitted responsibility for the outcome while backing his players’ effort and commitment.
“We knew it was a tricky situation,” Rowett said. “The performances have warranted more points, but we haven’t got them. I’ll look in the mirror and take that responsibility.”
The manager stressed that the players, including Zambian international Patson Daka, had shown determination throughout the run-in but were undone by missed opportunities and fine margins.
He added that the squad’s future will now be determined by the club’s hierarchy, with key decisions expected in the coming days as part of a broader review of the season.
“Some big decisions are going to have to be made over the next few weeks to make sure lessons have been learned,” Rowett said.
Rowett confident Leicester will bounce back after relegation blow
Despite the disappointment, Rowett expressed confidence in the club’s ability to recover, urging supporters to remain hopeful.
“For fans, this kind of low will sting for a few days, but I do believe this football club can bounce back in a far more positive way,” he said.
Attention now turns to rebuilding, with Leicester facing a crucial period that will shape their ambitions of an immediate return to higher-tier football.
