Bayern Munich and Arsenal joined Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid as the last four teams in this season’s UEFA Champions League following victories on Wednesday night.
Record holders Real Madrid were eliminated from the competition after losing 4-3 to Bayern Munich in a tense match, which ended 6-4 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, Arsenal drew 0-0 with Sporting CP to secure a 1-0 aggregate win and advance to the semi-finals.
In a post-match interview, Real Madrid CF manager Álvaro Arbeloa said the club’s dressing room was hit by frustration after failing to win a 16th UEFA Champions League title.
“I feel for them. For the effort they made. It hurts because Real Madrid won’t win their 16th title this year. I’m very proud. We’re going back to Madrid after giving it our all,” he said.
“We had a few chances to score. Before their goal, we were going to make a couple of substitutions, but their goal ended it. It wasn’t to be.
“That was a great match. We scored three goals and we had the chances to score more.”
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany attributed the team’s performance to their psychological strength against a dominant Real Madrid side.
“It was a very emotional game. We had lots of possession and always had the feeling we could score. But Real Madrid are Real Madrid. They are always a threat. The boys were mentally strong today to recover from setbacks. The fans helped us as well. We stayed calm and always felt that our moment would come,” said Kompany.
Bayern Munich will now face PSG in the semi-finals on 28th April, while Arsenal are set for a thrilling encounter against Atletico Madrid on April 29.
