Kabwe Rangers FC’s bus driver has died, while three players and club officials were injured following a road accident as the team travelled to Serenje for a FAZ Central Province Division Two Zone B League match against Silverlands FC on Sunday night.
The accident occurred between Mkushi and Kapiri Mposhi near the Mpula area.
The crash claimed the life of Sam Lungu, the driver of the hired bus, while three players, the club secretary, and the coach sustained injuries.
The injured players are Christopher Musakanya, Given Sichamba, and John Kombe, along with coach Lewis Nkandu and club secretary Karen Namukoko.
The Kabwe-based side had travelled to Serenje for a Week 25 fixture against Silverlands.
FAZ provides update
Central Province FAZ chairman Chisanga Pule exclusively gave an update to Bolanews regarding the accident.
“The guys were involved in an accident as they were leaving Mkushi, where they had played Silverland. As they were coming back, we were just told that they ran into a truck and the driver died on site,” he said.
“Then the Club Secretary, Madam Karen, was badly affected, and then the coach was badly affected by the same. The coach had pain in the chest and on the leg,” he added.
“The players were admitted this morning; we left around 03:00, though there were plans to evacuate them to Kabwe General Hospital, and the ambulances were on-site at the time when we left. There were about five players who were admitted because they had various injuries and fractures; others were released with the view that they were observed and checked by the hospital, and we traveled with them to Kabwe,” said Pule.
This is the second road accident involving a club in Zambia’s lower divisions after seven players from Chavuma Town Council Football Club died on the spot in a road traffic accident in Lukunyi Village of Zambezi District, North-Western Province, in October 2024.
