Tributes are being paid to former Zambia defender Zifa Nkhoma, who has died in Kitwe aged 55.

Nkhoma, nicknamed “Roberto Carlos” after former Brazilian international played for Nkana, Nchanga Rangers, and Power Dynamos.

His former teammate Linos Makwaza said the news was difficult to take.

“It is really heartbreaking. Zifa was not only a great player but also a brother and a friend. We shared the pitch and many moments together“

“This is a sad loss to all of us who knew him and to Zambian football at large,” Makwaza, who is currently an assistant coach for Power Dynamos, said in an interview.

And Power, where Nkhoma played between 1995 and 2001, also issued a statement.

“We are sad to learn of the passing of our legend, Mr. Zifa Nkhoma,” the club said.

“He served with dedication and passion throughout his time with the Club, lifting two league titles in 1997 and 2000, and added several cup honors to his name“

Among his most memorable contributions was the 1997 Mosi Cup Final, where he set up Kellies Mwaba for a decisive goal. He also played a pivotal role in helping the club claim the 2001 BP Top 8 trophy.

Nkhoma began his career at Nkana in 1984, moved to Nchanga Rangers in 1989, and later joined Power Dynamos, where he finished his career in 2001.
