Cape Verde strengthened their dream of a maiden World Cup appearance with a crucial 1-0 win over Cameroon on Tuesday in Praia. Dailon Livramento, the 24-year-old forward who plays in Italy, struck the winner in the 54th minute, pushing the Blue Sharks to the brink of qualification. They now need just three points in October—away to Libya and at home against Eswatini—to secure Group D and seal their place at the global showpiece.

Senegal’s comeback win over DR Congo

Senegal staged one of the most dramatic comebacks of the campaign, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Group B leaders DR Congo 3-2 in Kinshasa. Cedric Bakambu and Premier League forward Yoane Wissa put DR Congo ahead, but the former African champions roared back in the second half, with Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr netting the decisive goal.

The result gives Senegal a two-point lead, and wins against South Sudan and Mauritania in October would guarantee their third consecutive World Cup appearance.

Egypt missed the chance to qualify early after being held to a goalless draw by Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou. The Pharaohs remain favorites to progress from Group A and need just two more points to confirm their place at the 2026 finals.

Nigeria’s struggles continued in Group C after a 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein. The Super Eagles sit third with 11 points, six behind leaders Bafana Bafana.

Head coach Eric Chelle remained hopeful, insisting his side can still fight their way into contention: “My players are professionals, and I know they will want to win the remaining two games,” he said.

Nigeria must now beat Lesotho away and Benin at home in September to keep their faint hopes alive.
