When Patson Daka arrived at Leicester City in 2021, he looked destined for the very top. Fresh from a prolific spell at Salzburg, where he scored 27 league goals in 28 matches that season.
Given his pace and finishing, Daka was viewed as the natural successor to Jamie Vardy. But sometimes, football does not work like that. Five years later, Daka finds himself searching for a new club.
His contract at League One-bound Leicester is coming to an end in the next six days.
During his time at Leicester, Daka never established himself as the ultimate starter, even following the departure of Vardy. Interestingly, he was closely linked to a number of clubs that wanted to prize him away from the King Power Stadium.
The question now is simple: will any of the clubs that previously showed interest finally make their move?
Valencia
Of all the clubs linked with Daka over the past three years, Valencia arguably makes the most sense today.
The Spanish side has a long history of rebuilding with undervalued players and would be attracted by the fact that Daka is available without a transfer fee. His pace would suit La Liga, where teams often leave space in behind, and at 27, he still has years ahead of him.
The biggest obstacle is financial. Valencia are not known for handing out large contracts, and Daka may have to accept a wage reduction after leaving Leicester. But if he is serious about reigniting his career, Mestalla could provide the ideal platform.
Valencia recently signed Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar from Real Sociedad. It is unlikely they will move for Daka.
Real Betis
When Real Betis were linked with Daka in 2024, the move had a certain appeal. Betis were competing regularly in Europe and looking for attacking depth.
Betis tend to favour technically gifted forwards who can contribute heavily to their build-up play. Daka’s strengths remain his movement, pace and ability to attack space rather than dropping deep to link play.
Only two strikers have arrived at Betis in the last transfer market, 20-year-old Luis Rodriguez and teenager Gonzalo Petit. May be They could revisit their interest in Daka.
Fenerbahçe
Turkish giants Fenerbahçe could be one to watch.
The Turkish Super Lig has become a destination for players looking to relaunch their careers, and Daka’s profile fits that mould perfectly. Turkish clubs also place significant value on experienced internationals who can make an immediate impact.
Unlike clubs in Spain, Fenerbahce may be more willing to match Daka’s salary expectations. The prospect of European football could also be attractive.
If Daka’s representatives are looking for a club that can offer both competitiveness and financial security, Turkey could emerge as a serious option.
Bournemouth
Bournemouth’s interest in Daka dates back to 2023, although a move never materialised. Reports at the time suggested the deal collapsed before completion.
A return to the Premier League would undoubtedly appeal to Daka, but Bournemouth have evolved considerably since then. They now operate with a clear recruitment strategy focused on younger players with resale value.
While a free transfer reduces the financial risk, Bournemouth may question whether Daka’s Leicester record justifies a second attempt.
AC Milan
Among the clubs on the list, AC Milan is undoubtedly the most glamorous.
However, it is also the least realistic.
Milan have consistently targeted strikers with either elite pedigree or proven Serie A experience. Daka’s stock has fallen since the Italian giants were first linked with him, and it is difficult to imagine them making him a priority this summer.
Could There Be a Surprise Return to Salzburg?
Perhaps the most intriguing possibility is not on the list at all.
A return to Salzburg would allow Daka to rediscover the environment where he played his best football. The Austrian champions know exactly what he offers, and he would immediately become one of the league’s biggest stars again.
Sometimes a player’s career needs a reset rather than another gamble.
