Leicester City Football Club manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has maintained that the Foxes still have a mathematical chance to survive relegation in the 2024-25 Premier League season.
The Foxes suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Thursday evening in London ahead of another tricky away encounter against Chelsea Football at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
It has turned out to be a nightmare for Van Nistelrooy, who has picked up seven points in his 14 matches in charge.
Van Nistelrooy’s charges have lost 11 of their past 12 Premier League games, winning one.
As such, Van Nistelrooy has picked up just seven points, three fewer than previous manager Steve Cooper managed this season, 10 points in 12 games in charge.
Speaking after the defeat to West Ham, the Dutchman expressed optimism about his team’s chances of remaining in the Premier League.
“We are going to get up again. We are still in this fight; mathematically we are there, and we keep fighting as long as we can,” van Nistelrooy said in a post-match interview.
The Foxes have gone four matches without finding the back of the net, a situation that has worried Van Nistelrooy, who attributed it to a poor first-half showing, stating, “If you play like this in the first half, you are not going to score. We were not even close to scoring. In the second half, we were much closer to scoring. At least you give yourself an opportunity. It must be clear that the fight was only one half today, and that is not enough.”
Thursday’s defeat to West Ham leaves Leicester City five points off the relegation positions as they have accumulated only 17 points.
The next three matches and five matches will take them to Chelsea before hosting Manchester United, with an away fixture against Manchester City to follow.
Thereafter, van Nistelrooy’s charges will be up against Newcastle at home before a trip to Brighton.
