The South African DSTV Premiership side’s defender, Oshwin Andries, has passed away, the club announced in a statement.

The Western Cape club made the announcement late on Saturday night; however, they could not share any other details regarding the player’s passing.

Part of Stellenbosch’s statement read, “It is with deep sadness that Stellenbosch fc has learned of the untimely passing of promising young defender, Oshwin Andries.

“The club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage and asks that his family’s privacy is respected in this difficult time of bereavement.”

He came up through the Stellenbosch youth ranks, played in the Dstv Premiership, and scored his sole goal for the club against Royal AM to set a club record for being the youngest goal scorer ever in the South African top-flight league.

Andries, who recently captained the South African U-20 national team in the Afcon Cosafa qualifiers, is believed to have been stabbed on Saturday, according to Idisktv.

Further details concerning his tragic death, however, are currently scant.
