Talking points as Zimbabwe eliminates defending Champion, Zambia

Zambia have now conceded 13 goals in their last eight games. Perhaps the biggest problem now is their form, failing to win any of their last eight games.

Zambia’s COSAFA title defence came to an end following their 2-0 loss to regional rival, Zimbabwe. The exit depicts a fall from grace from a side that’s currently struggling for form.

Following Red Arrows’ Super League double, Chisi Mbewe was poised to lead Zambia to yet another regional championship, but lackluster performances cause the Chipolopolo to be eliminated from the competition during the group stages.

You could only sense a feeling of DeJa’Vu when Michael Tapera breached Zambia’s leaky defense to give the Zimbabweans the lead with less than 10 minutes played.

When it appeared that Zambia might have something, Killian Kanguluma’s careless challenge reduced the reigning champs to ten men.

Ten minutes later, Takunda Benhura scored the Warriors’ second goal of the match with a close-range header, taking advantage of their numerical advantage.

Here’s a list of the three talking points about that match as Zambia lose their second game in a row.

Zambia’s defense continues to be generous

Chisi Mbewe couldn’t quite find a solution. In the game against Kenya, Zambia’s clumsy defense conceded twice in their group opener. Similarly Zambia were below par against Zimbabwe.

Zambia have now conceded 13 goals in their last eight games. Perhaps the biggest problem now is their form, failing to win any of their last eight games.

Zambia’s Midfield Was Blunt

It was a timid performance from a Zambian midfield without clear cut chances on goal to split the opposition’s defense.

Zimbabwe’s defense was solid as a brick wall

Zimbabwe Warriors not only defended brilliantly but quickly transitioned into attack with each chance they got. Zimbabwe’s tactical approach was spot on while Zambia couldn’t quite get a foothold of the game.
