A bit of luck : Essien on African nation lifting the World Cup

Ghana legend Michael Essien believes luck is the only missing ingredient preventing an African nation from winning the FIFA World Cup.

Since the inception of the tournament, no African team has lifted football’s biggest prize.

However, the expansion of the World Cup from five to 10 African representatives is widely viewed as an opportunity for the continent to finally produce a champion.

The closest an African nation has come to winning the World Cup was at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where Morocco made history by reaching the semi-finals.

Essien, who represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup, believes African football is steadily moving closer to the ultimate achievement and only needs a bit of fortune to get over the line.

“Slowly the continent is getting close,” Essien said when he appeared on the Wayne Rooney Podcast on Tuesday. “We are all keeping our fingers crossed; one day it will happen.”

Asked what is missing for an African side to win the World Cup, Essien said, “I think a bit of luck; we are getting closer; we just need a little push like Arsenal has done,” he said.

Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Algeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have realistic chances of progressing deeper into the competition.
