The Copper Princesses breezed past Lesotho in the COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship final, recording a jaw-dropping 15-0 victory on Friday.
Carol Kanyemba’s lasses took no prisoners at the UJ Soweto Stadium in Johannesburg, dominating the debutants in all departments.
Mercy Chipasula netted seven goals, with a Masela Sekeseke hat-trick, Hellen Banda brace, and goals from Lilian Mwenda, Janet Chirwa and Wendy Mwikisa completing the emphatic scoreline.

Zambia has set the record for the most COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championships won, becoming the first team to lift the trophy twice, their first was in 2021 under Kaluba Kangwa.
Largest victory in COSAFA U17 Women’s final
Never before had a team managed to score even as many as five goals in the final of the COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship.
Prior to Friday, the largest triumph in a final was Zambia’s 4-0 win against Botswana when they secured their maiden title in 2021. Carol Kanyemba’s side comfortably decimated the previous record, beating Lesotho 15-0.
First team to claim title with male and female coaches
The Copper Princesses became the first side to win the COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship titles under both male and female coaches. In 2021, Kaluba Kangwa guided Zambia to its first title before Carol Kanyemba secured a second.
However, this is not Kanyemba’s first time bagging a gold medal, as she was Kangwa’s assistant in 2021.
Highest-scoring player in the COSAFA U17 women’s final
Tipped to be Zambia’s next world-beater, Mercy Chipasula has been unplayable for the Copper Princesses. She tallied an impressive 13 goals during the just-concluded COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship. Seven of those goals came in the final against Lesotho, breaking the record for most goals scored by a player.
