Zambian players abroad weekend wrap| Kangwa, Prisca, Kundananji shine

Kings Kangwa scored, Prisca Chilufya assisted twice, and Kundananji stole the show with two goals to advance Bay FC to the NWSL playoffs.

Copper Queens striker Racheal Kundananji became the first Bay FC player to score a brace in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), helping them qualify for the playoffs after downing Houston Dash 3-2. 

Bay FC have avoided a NWSL Championship quarterfinal meeting with Barbra Banda’s Orlando Pride as they could now only face them in the final.

Kundananji finished the regular season with five goals and four assists in 21 matches, while compatriot Barbra Banda tallied 13 goals and six assists from 22 games.

Kings Kangwa on target, Prisca Chilufya assists twice.

Chipolopolo midfielder Kings Kangwa had a field day on Sunday, scoring for Hapoel Be’er Sheva and collecting yet another Man of the Match award in a 3-1 win over Ashdod.

Prisca Chilufya notched two assists as FC Juarez beat Puebla FC 4-2 in their final Liga Mx Femenil Apertura match. In her last four outings, Chilufya has scored once and assisted seven times.

Lameck Banda starts for US Lecce

Lameck Banda featured for 57 minutes as US Leece lost 1-0 to Bologna in the Serie A.

In Spain, Francisco Mwepu was an unused substitute in Cadiz’s 2-0 defeat to Sporting, while Peter Chikola made the starting XI for Cadiz B, who fell 1-0 to RB Linense.

Zambian defender Ricky Chanda and FK Riteriai hoisted the I Lyga Championship trophy on Saturday, marking the joyous occasion with a 3-0 victory against Nevezis.

Sabobo, Chaiwa miss Zurich vs. Young Boys

Neither Joseph Sabobo nor Miguel Chaiwa took part in the goalless draw between FC Zurich and BSC Young Boys. While Chaiwa was out due to an ankle injury, Sabobo was left out of the matchday squad. The youngster played more minutes in the AfCON qualifiers against Chad than he has in the 2024-25 Swiss Super League.

Evans Kangwa concluded the 2024 Chinese Super League season with a 1-0 win against Cangzhou Mighty Lions on Saturday. He has been Qingdao Hainiu’s most productive player this season with five goals and seven assists in 27 league games. Meanwhile, fellow 2012 AfCON winner Stopilla Sunzu did not feature for Changchun Yatai at the weekend.

Sakala still nursing head injury.

Fashion Sakala, Lubambo Musonda and Edward Chilufya missed out on the weekend’s action due to injuries.

Meanwhile, Clatous Chama and Obino Chisala started for Yanga SC and Costa do Sol, respectively. Czech-based midfielder Benson Sakala was an unused substitute for Mlada Boleslav on Saturday.

Copper Queens trio Lushomo Mweemba, Martha Tembo, and Xiomara Mapepa started in Turkey and Russia, respectively.
