Tandi Mwape Suffers Ruptured ACL, Set to Miss Rest of Season and Zambia’s Friendly Against Russia

Zesco United and Zambia national team defender Tandi Mwape has suffered a devastating injury, with the club confirming that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The injury comes as a major blow not only to Zesco United but also to the Zambia national team, as Mwape had been a regular fixture on both sides.

The rupture of Mwape’s ACL was confirmed following medical scans at his club. As a result, the 28-year-old defender will be sidelined for several months.

With the injury keeping him out of action for the remainder of the season, Mwape will miss several key matches, including Zambia’s much-anticipated friendly against Russia on March 25. The friendly match, which was set to provide Zambia’s head coach Avram Grant with an opportunity to assess his squad ahead of the upcoming international fixtures, will proceed without one of their key defenders.

Mwape had been a consistent presence in Grant’s squad, regularly appearing in the starting lineup as one of the defensive stalwarts for the Chipolopolo.

The timing of the injury also raises concerns about his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is scheduled to take place in December this year. While recovery from an ACL injury typically takes several months, Mwape’s hopes of representing Zambia at the continental tournament in December may now be in jeopardy, depending on his recovery timeline.
