“Respect rule of law”—Mweemba responds to calls for sacking of Grant

Mweemba says the coach has a valid contract and warns against costly decisions.

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba has urged fans to respect coach Avram Grant amid mounting calls for his dismissal.

Speaking on Soccer Africa, Mweemba emphasized that Grant has a “running and valid contract,” adding that he does not want to terminate it and incur heavy costs as is currently the case with Aljosa Asonovic.

“This coach has a running and valid contract. Some people have been suggesting that we separate by mutual consent, but mutual consent is not a unilateral decision. When you talk about mutual consent, there must be consensus ad idem—that’s a legal term meaning the meeting of the minds,” Mweemba said on the live Super Sport Tv show on Thursday night.

Grant’s contract is set to expire in February 2027 after his initial two-year deal was extended as part of an agreement with FAZ, following Zambia’s qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Mweemba, therefore, wants everyone to respect the existing contract.

“We must also respect the rule of law so that we don’t take a unilateral decision. We are already heavily liable for Aljosa Asanovic; we don’t want to find ourselves in a similar situation with our current coach, Avram Grant.

“For me, I want everyone to respect the coach. He has a valid contract as it stands. I am a lawyer myself, and we must uphold the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, Mweemba revealed that the association’s national team technical committee has already met and made resolutions regarding the future of the national team. He added that an official announcement will be made next week on the outcomes of those discussions.
