Former Chipolopolo winger and 2007 CAF Young African footballer of the year award winner, Clifford Mulenga, 35, has revealed plans to hang his boots after an industrious career.

Mulenga started his football career at Chiparamba Great Eagles before moving to South Africa in 2004 where he joined the University of Pretoria football club.

He went on to play for  Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, and Ajax Cape Town among other South African top-flight clubs.

Mulenga is currently a player for Zambian Super League side Forest Rangers where he has scored 14 goals since joining them in 2020. He also helped the Ndola-based side qualify for continental football two seasons ago.

The former Chipolopolo winger told Bolanews that he plans to retire at the end of this season.

“My honest and actual plan is to retire at the end of this season,” he said. “I think my active playing days have come to an end.”

With his contract set to expire in September this year, Mulenga said he may not renew it.

“At the end of the season, I will have a chat with the coach and the Chairman about my future…. My Contract ends in September 2023,” he told BolaNews.

What’s next for Mulenga?

Mulenga scored 50 goals for all his previous clubs across all competitions. He also netted four goals in 28 appearances for the senior Zambia National Team.

The Forest Rangers winger has stated that after retiring, he plans to begin his coaching and management career at Forest.

“I plan to use the remaining 4 months of my contract after the season ends to do an internship in football coaching and club management right here at Forest Rangers root club. So that’s part of my plans when I do retire,” concluded Mulenga.
