Former Chipolopolo Boys striker Collins Mbesuma says Zambia needs a young and energetic coach to take over the national team, and that he is available for any position within the setup if called upon.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) announced on Wednesday that it had mutually parted ways with Avram Grant following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Since taking charge in December 2022, Grant guided Zambia to two successive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications.

With only 51 days remaining before the AFCON tournament begins in Morocco, FAZ has yet to advertise the position or recruit a new coach for the Chipolopolo. Still, BolaNews understands a local coach is the likely option.

Mbesuma, who was part of Zambia’s 2012 AFCON-winning side, told BolaNews in an exclusive interview that the national team needs fresh and young minds.

“For me, a young Zambian coach with new ideas and a new approach, or maybe even to appoint a veteran coach to guide the young coach with proper qualifications utilizing modern tools and methods,” he said.

“It’s time also to introduce fresh blood in coaching. We can’t go back on the cycle, you know, same thing. I think new ideas, fresh blood, and fresh energy. I think it will take us far,” Mbesuma added.

“Football has changed a lot. We are coming, we young coaches. Also, we have seen modern football has changed a lot; a lot of things are involved. You need to bring in some new energy and new ideas.”

When asked if he would be interested in being part of the technical bench, Mbesuma responded: “Why not if there is an opportunity to also add my experience? I have been around. If there is an opportunity in the Chipolopolo setup, I am available.”

Zambia was drawn in Group A for the 2025 AFCON alongside Mali, Comoros, and tournament hosts Morocco. They will open their campaign against Mali on December 22.
