Former Chipolopolo midfielder Kennedy Mudenda has challenged the current crop of holding midfielders in the country to adopt a more adventurous approach on the pitch instead of relying on safe back passes.
Mudenda also known as “Kaspa” during his heydays hang up his boots on 24th December, 2021.
Speaking in an interview to Bolanews, Mudenda, said modern defensive midfielders must balance protecting the backline with initiating attacking moves if the national team is to become more competitive.
“They need to be brave on the ball. Football has changed. A holding midfielder is not just there to win the ball and pass backward,” he said.
Asked to give an example of one of the best holding midfielders he played alongside, Mudenda named his former club mate Emmanuel Chimpinde.
He noted that many local midfielders tend to slow down play by opting for easy passes to defenders rather than driving the team forward.
