Chiwisa was part of Avram Grant’s 55-member squad, but he did not make the final list for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Lusaka Youth Academy player now plays for Italian Serie A club Atalanta FC’s youth team. He previously represented Zambia at the U17 and U23 levels.

Chiwisa told Bolanews that he wasn’t mentally prepared and didn’t perform up to Grant’s expectations during training.

“While I regret not being part of the final team due to my own mental readiness, I view this as a learning opportunity,” said the 20-year-old playmaker. “Others worked harder and I am using this experience to improve myself daily. It was an honor to be called up.”

Chiwisa has made six appearances for the Antalata U23 team this season. He is hoping to be called up again for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Zambia were eliminated from the group stage after losing 1-0 to Morocco and drawing one-all with DR Congo and Tanzania.

Following their early AFCON exit, they will now turn their attention to the World Cup qualifiers, which will resume in June.

Chipolopolo began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 4-2 victory over Congo Brazzaville before falling 2-1 to Niger last year.

They will face Morocco on June 5, 2024, before hosting Tanzania three days later.
